Gateway Towers

John Rudel, a professor at Virginia Wesleyan College, along with students of Norfolk’s Emerging Leaders program, created sculptures installed over existing NET bus signs during the summer of 2013. They stood in place until 2021 when they were removed from wear and tear and in preparation for new sidewalk construction in the NEON District.

Love

Completed in the very early days of the NEON District in 2015, Love was a collaboration between artist couple Alan Jelercic and Victoria Farr that lived on a vacant storefront on Granby Street. The mural on panel boards was a testament to their love for each other and their son and their home in Norfolk.

Wild Alley

In 2015, then Chrysler Museum Glass Studio instructor Hannah Kirkpatrick led a student artist team from the Governor’s School for the Arts to create a neon piece inspired by the wilderness in a forgotten alley corner.

Progression

Comprised of three geodesic domes clad in mirrored and dichroic glass, this site-specific work by Robin M. Rogers hangs in the atrium of Glass Wheel Studio where it reflects and refracts natural light. Currently, Glass Wheel Studio is closed to the public and Progression is not available for public viewing.

Love Across the USA

To celebrate the LQBTQ+ community during Pride month in 2021, the NEON District joined a national movement to spread some love to every state in the USA (and beyond). Local fiber artist Tania Rich crocheted six rainbow yarn bombs emblazoned with the word LOVE, hand-stitching them to light poles in the center of the NEON Love Across the USA

NEON Holiday Stars

After a successful first year of custom holiday designs, two new artists were selected for the 2021 holiday season to create a new vision for the district’s star décor. Custom star paintings by Aimee Bruce inspired by neon lights and bokeh dots were displayed at Retail Alliance’s parking lot, in the Plot flower bed and NEON Holiday Stars

Xenon

The artist Silas Baker wanted his mural to be a welcome sign as you enter the NEON District in downtown Norfolk. Sticking to a graffiti-style design which has always been a strong passion of his, the mural is bright, colorful and eye-catching, what most people associate with classic neon signage.

NEON Fence Gallery

The NEON District Fence Gallery was a temporary outdoor art exhibition surrounding the former Greyhound Bus Station in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. The gallery was comprised of twenty vinyl mesh panels printed with local and regional artists’ designs along the Granby Street and Brambleton Avenue sides of the site’s fence.
